Crowns
When you lose tooth structure and the tooth cannot be filled simply by a dental filling, you require a crown to cover that tooth. Patients can lose their tooth structure from many causes such as bad tooth decay, broken by accident, undergoing root canal treatment, etc. The crown will cover or replace part of the tooth seen in the mouth. Another advantage of dental crowns are esthetics. Dental crowns can help a patient’s appearance because it can correct chips, discolorations, misshaping and the alignment of teeth.
Preparing teeth for crowns usually involves two visits. Dr. Toth will prepare the tooth for the crown. Take an impression of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. Place a custom temporary crown to cover the prepared tooth while the permanent dental crown is being made. At your second visit, we will remove the temporary, check the fit and color of the permanent crown, and then cement it in place.
Dental crowns are made from a variety of dental materials, including:
Metal (gold, nickel or chromium)
Porcelain fused to a metal base
All porcelain or all ceramic
